UPDATED  11/3/2024

We are one of the few jewelers in the country with the skills and tools to redesign wedding rings or engagement rings entirely using your precious metal and gems. Take a look at this 45 second video to see how you can actually wear your family connections:

We can repurpose old earrings, bracelets, or a wedding ring into new jewelry or rings, convert a ring to a necklace or earrings, or accomplish just about any jewelry redesign process your heart desires.

It doesn’t matter where you live. Every day, we are making a new wedding ring from old gold, collaborating on an old wedding ring redesign, and creating new jewelry from old jewelry for people all over North America.

Plus, with the cost of gold so high, you typically save money.

Here's the bottom line:

This article probably provides the most complete information on repurposing jewelry you'll find anywhere online.

We’ve divided it into four easy to read sections:

1.  Case studies: Take a quick look at example projects involving old wedding ring redesign and creating new custom jewelry from old or inherited jewelry.

2.  How do we redesign old jewelry into new? Enter our studio to see how we redesign jewelry and transform old wedding rings into new wedding rings.

3.  Pricing $$$: What will your jewelry redesign project cost? How much does it cost to get a ring made? Some of our redesigned old jewelry projects have a fixed price. For custom designs, I can provide you with a quote. We can always offer you options if you’re on a tight budget.

4.  About us: This covers the issue of trust, who we are as dedicated artisan jewelers, uniquely qualified for  repurposing projects.

Before we dive in, here’s a little teaser. Sure, we can redesign grandmother’s ring into a fancy pavé halo setting for your wedding!

This jewelry redesign before and after shows a reset engagement ring, reusing gold and gems from our client.

This example of jewelry redesign before and after shows a reset engagement ring —  a totally custom design from approved CAD drawings reusing gold and gems.

But, we’re also expert hand fabricators.

Here we transformed a sentimental silver spoon and 14K baby bracelet into a "free-form" ring.

Turn your forgotten old gold jewelry and gemstones into a brand new diamond ring redesign!

And here's one more "atypical" project for good measure:

We can reuse the gold from a gold tooth or dental crown to create new jewelry, even a wedding ring.

We transformed a dental crown into a wedding ring — adding a bit of our gold.

Gold from your redesign engagement ring projects can come from ANY source.  If you don’t have enough, we can supplement.

PART 1:  Repurposed Designer Jewelry: Before and After

CASE STUDY 1: Redesigned Wedding Rings and Engagement Rings

Most of our jobs involve transforming an old wedding ring into a new wedding ring, as shown below:

A simple wedding ring redesign — transforming an old inherited wedding ring into a brand new design is simple and affordable!

Can white gold be melted down and reused? Yes! In the redesign wedding ring project above, we melted the white gold ring on the left and created the domed comfort fit wedding ring on the right.

We gave this old wedding ring redesign a hammer finish. But we offer several other wedding ring textures as well:

Reflective Jewelry offers five distinct finished for gold rings: high polish, matte, hand-hammered, Playa (rough), and dippled (sand)

How much does it cost to redesign a ring? We go into details in Part 3, but our prices start at $495.

Even if you need ideas for old wedding rings for redesigning engagement rings, we can help because we specialize in custom jewelry. The old wedding ring redesign pictured below was based upon a drawing from the customer:

We our artisan custom jewelry skills, we can redesign your unwanted gold and diamond into a brand new diamond engagement ring redesign.

And, here is an example of what to do with old wedding rings as a before and after wedding and engagement ring set. This involved resetting diamond rings in white gold:

This custom engagement ring and wedding ring set is based on designs in our own collection. With us, redesigning wedding rings and engagement rings is a cinch!

What to do with old engagement rings? It’s easy: make something that you love. We fabricated these custom designer rings entirely by hand in our Santa Fe studio.

We set the diamond in what we call our open mount, which we can use in any ring. This setting, with a low set diamond, is particularly great if you have an active lifestyle.

Now for something completely different!

One of the recycle wedding ring projects that we really specialize in is mixed metal. This three color ring is one of my favorite ideas for an old wedding ring redesign:

We redesigned the old engagement rings on the left into two new tri-color wedding rings on the right.

Here’s another example of what to do with old wedding rings — combine two to make one wider design:

We combined two rings into one to create this wide wedding band.

Continuing on with two tone ideas for redesigning wedding rings – in the project below we are using old diamonds in a new ring and adding one of our beautiful Montana sapphires.

A before and after gold ring repurposing with Montana Sapphire.

We’re just getting started, but if you’re already inspired,

Let's talk! Give me, Kyle, a call at 888-733-5238 — or email info (at) reflectivejewelry.com. Include a photo of what you have and a photo or description of what you’d like us to make, and I’ll get you a quote.

CASE STUDY 2: Ideas for Old Wedding Rings Based on Our Designs

While  a lot of our redesign wedding ring work involves recreating classic low domed and flat topped bands, many of our clients use their recycling wedding rings or jewelry redesign projects to create something uniquely amazing!

The project below started as a redesign of a grandmother’s ring and other old family jewelry:

We reset a customer's diamonds from these earrings into a the new wide hammered ring shown.

The ring redesign “After” shot is a variation of our King’s ring.

Here’s another before/after jewelry redesign example that shows variations from our own jewelry design line:

Left: a customer's old jewelry. Right: the two new rings we creating by reusing their gold and resetting their gemstones.

Next, one of our customers chose to make our Donegal Engagement Ring design using his gold and his grandmother's nearly 2-carat diamond. You can see below the material he gave us on the left — except for the diamond which I had immediately removed for safe keeping.

We can turn a ring into a pendant, or a pendant into a ring! Here, we took old gold chain and an inherited diamond and created a brand new engagement ring redesign.

We’re often resetting heirloom diamonds in engagement ring redesigns.

In the next case, our customer knew she wanted some kind of heart motif. After some discussion, she chose a variation of our Corazon ring — replicating the heart motif around the ring and resetting her diamonds:

You can see from this custom ring design, which features 6 hearts and diamonds, that we can make old jewelry into new jewelry of any kind!

We used her gold to make the center of the ring, and soldered on silver borders. Then, we finished the design using old diamonds in a new ring.

Whether you're sending us inherited old rings or any other piece of old gold jewelry, such as old bracelets or earrings, makes no difference in our fabrication.

If you're making a new ring from an old ring, you can look at our wedding ring collection for inspiration. Or, send us an image that represents your heart’s desire!

No matter what, we can fabricate your redesigned jewelry!

CASE STUDY 3: Combining Two Rings Into One

I got a call from a heartbroken gentleman who had lost his wife. He had her wedding ring, and wondered if we could combine a husband’s wedding ring with a wife’s.

For those who face the issue of what to do with old engagement rings, or wedding rings after a death, redesigning to combine two rings into one may be one of the most poignant options.

We combined his wedding ring with hers to make a new ring, setting it with the diamond from her engagement ring:

Combining two rings into one is a beautiful way to honor a loved one. We'll even reset your diamond in the new piece.

The question of what to do with a wedding ring after a loss, or what to do with your parents’ wedding bands, is not an easy one.

This next project was shown in the video at the top of this article. This customer handled the question of what to do with a wedding ring after a death in a very special way. We took one ring — her late father’s — and made it into three identical rings — one for her mother, one for her sister, and one for herself.

The question of what to do with your parents' wedding bands after death is a difficult one. Here, we transformed a father's gold wedding band into three identical new rings.

A woman who had lost her husband wanted to create a ring by combining the material from their rings and resetting her diamond. She also had some additional length of gold chain to melt down.

We started with repurposing old gold from the left, and created the new diamond ring on the right:

When combining two rings into one, the possibilities are wide open. We will work with you to create a one-of-a-kind ring design that speaks to you, and honors your loved one.

When combining two rings into one, we can also set any gemstone into the new ring — from small melee to a center stone from an old engagement ring.

When redesign engagement ring projects involve CAD drawings, you are in control. We’ll create multiple photo-realistic versions of your engagement ring redesign before settling on exactly what you want.

In this next example, we used the rubies from an old style engagement ring from a grandmother to create this new contemporary beauty.

Our client came into our shop with her own ideas. Here is her initial drawing:

The initial sketch for a jewelry redesign project.

We ended up creating this:

A ring repurposing project before and after, featuring a truly distinct design!

CASE STUDY 4 More Ideas for Redesigning Wedding Rings

Here, we have more examples of redesigned wedding rings after a death.

A woman who lost her husband wanted to redesign wedding rings and an old class ring while maintaining the original design. We took the ring and other gold sent with it and converted it to a necklace.

This before and after jewelry redesign involved transforming old class rings into a unique pendant necklace.

Another option for repurposing wedding rings after death that we do quite often is to turn rings into a cross pendant.

Before and after photos of redesigning a wedding ring into a simple cross pendant necklace.

Here’s another convert ring to pendant project… this time, using the silver and gold from one of our customer’s rings as a base for the cross of our own design.

Before and after pictures showing a gold ring repurposed into a Celtic cross necklace pendant.

We have to show you one more redesigned cross pendant…. One of our customers had a lot of white gold, and he wanted us to do something in remembrance of his mother.

On the reverse side of the cross we made a small chamber that contains his mother’s ashes.

An intricate custom cross pendant necklace designed to hold a loved one's cremated remains/ashes.

We set several recycled diamonds in this cross, his and ours. This is definitely the most elaborate repurposed cross design we’ve ever done.

CASE STUDY 4  Converting A Ring To A Necklace

What makes our company particularly suited for making new jewelry from old? We are experts in both computer rendering and hand fabrication. There are many ways, for example that we’re able to convert a ring into a necklace.

A customer who was getting married asked us to create a new pair of wedding rings using his grandparents’ old wedding rings. We had some extra gold from the old wedding ring redesign. We used this gold for a “convert a ring to a pendant project,” which resulted in the heart pendant below. The necklace was gifted to the mother of the bride at the wedding event.

Our jewelers can convert a ring to a necklace, creating new jewelry from old in ways many other jewelers can't!

As this story shows, there are many ways to redesign your grandmother’s ring! You can turn it into a new necklace for her, a ring for a child or grandchild, or possibly both.

Here's another similar example of converting a ring to a necklace. For this project, we melted the white and yellow gold from the ring on the left — which belonged to our customer's grandfather — and made the new two-tone ring on the right.

Again, we had some extra gold from this project, which we used to create a heart pendant for our customer's grandmother — which then served as a wedding gift.

We converted this old wedding rings into a necklace and a new ring.

If you are converting a ring to a necklace, we could actually do a much more extensive project than just bending wire.

Here’s one such example of turning a wedding ring into a pendant:

We reset the pearl in this ring to a new necklace pendant in this custom jewelry redesign.

This client had a ring that she never wore...but she loved the pearl set in it. We were able to remove the pearl and create a lovely pendant by repurposing her gold.

Below, we transformed an old gold ring and gold chain into a fully custom pendant:

This jewelry transformation project involved melting down an old gold chain and creating an entirely custom gold necklace pendant reusing this old material.

This was a gift a lovely couple commissioned for their son.

Of course:

If we can convert a ring to a necklace, we can also transform a necklace (or necklaces) into a ring!

Take this project for example, in which we repurposed both gold and gemstones in a new jewelry design:

We converted several rings and necklace pendants into a new gemstone engagement ring in this old to new jewelry redesign project.

We took the gold from several necklace pendants and a ring, and used it to create a brand new gemstone engagement ring set with a stunning rose quartz and diamond accents. The result is a timeless yet unique piece, which our customer absolutely adores.

More Ideas for Redesigning Wedding Rings

CASE STUDY 5

What do you do if you have inherited old wedding rings, but have no need for a new wedding or engagement ring?

Our client, when considering ideas for  inherited old wedding rings, asked for a free-flowing wide ring that used her existing diamond.

Working together, we came up with this design:

We can combine two rings into one—or even four rings into one, as shown here! We even reset the customer's old diamond in the new piece.

It required a lot of finessing from our jewelers, who are more accustomed to making less organic-looking designs. After completion we sent her back all her gemstones.

In the end, our client wrote, "I received the ring and I love it. It fits perfectly too!"

We can also repurpose silver into new designs. Here’s an example of that:

We can repurpose your silver jewelry into a brand new design.

Redesign Custom Jewelry Using Your Gems

CASE STUDY 6  involves resetting diamonds and rubies.

Since we started our company in 1995, customers have requested absolutely anything and everything, ranging from changing out gemstones in existing designs to immortalizing the pawprint of a beloved four-legged friend.

For this custom jewelry design project, we immortalized the pawprint of a client's beloved four-legged friend.

For this custom jewelry project, we recreated the pawprint of a client's beloved dog on a pendant. More details on this here!

This customer actually sent us a muddy paw print on a piece of paper after her beloved dog passed away. We collaborated closely, coming up with this pendant design which we made entirely by hand.

Here's a short video on our Custom Jewelry Design Process:

CASE STUDY 7  Resetting Diamond Engagement Rings: Using Old Diamonds In A New Ring

Using old diamonds in a new ring, or resetting diamond engagement rings, is such a common request that we always have these kinds of projects going through our shop.

We can take your old gold and make a new ring with it, or we can reset your diamonds into one of our designs. Here's a recent job we did using diamonds from our client's mother and grandmother:

In this example below, the customer provided us with a diamond and two old signet-style rings which we melted down and used to make a new engagement ring:

Melting down your old gold to combine two rings into one is no problem!

We hammered the ring for additional texture and used the extra gold to pay for the project. The ring itself cost $570 and setting and mounting $385.

Another example: the ring below is one of our designs, but was reset with a customer's diamond of over two carats:

This diamond engagement ring is one of our Open Rope designs. This exact version was reset with a customer's old diamond.

What a beauty! Our Open Rope Engagement Ring designs, some of our most popular, feature a low-set center stone — the perfect engagement ring for an active lifestyle.

Another idea for redesigning wedding rings is shown below. We were asked to duplicate the ring on the left, which is made in base metal. We used the customer's old gold to make the new ring on the right, which we set with a ruby and lab grown diamonds.

We can cast using old gold to make a custom wedding ring, engagement ring, or even designer ring—as shown here with this class ring!

In the next redesign ring project, we took gold and diamonds to the left and made this custom ring:

This gold ring redesign before and after features a sapphire and unique halo setting.

CASE STUDY 8 More Jewelry Redesign Before and After

The two examples of old wedding ring redesign show how the transformation can be quite dramatic.

The "before" photo here is an older, inherited piece. The "after" photo is the engagement ring which used the customer's diamonds and sapphire.

The gold from this old wedding ring was repurposed into a new engagement ring. We were able to reset the customer's diamonds and sapphire in this new design.

In the case below, we brainstormed with considering various ideas for old wedding rings. She settled on this one-of-a-kind design based on one of our existing designs:

This jewelry redesign before and after features a sapphire and diamond engagement ring. We remade the ring into a more contemporary design, and reset the diamonds and sapphire in the new ring.

In this case we did not re-use the gold. We gave the customer 93% of its spot value toward the making of the new ring.

And here is one more custom designed sapphire ring project:

A custom sapphire ring, created by repurposing our client's old gold into a new jewelry design.

We reset this client's small diamonds (a fantastic color combo!), and used her yellow gold to create the center band of the new ring. The rest of the ring was fabricated in silver.

We also provided her with a top-notch Montana sapphire for this project!

CASE STUDY 9  Custom Ideas for Redesigning Wedding Rings

Here again, the customer provided the diamonds and a basic design. We drew up this sketch and then created this piece entirely by hand:

We'll create your custom wedding ring, custom engagement ring, or custom jewelry design making new jewelry from old from your own sketch.

You can always send us a simple drawing for your custom idea. Don’t worry about not being an artist! We can work with you.

With the ring above, we used our client’s diamonds. The whole custom job, entirely handmade, from the customer’s drawing to the final product, ran $2700.

But now for something completely different for a custom design from old jewelry:

Send us a drawing of what you're looking for, and we'll help you create the jewelry redesign (or wedding ring redesign) of your dreams!

We used the gold from the rings on the left to create the gold band with a silver backing shown on the right. The customer sent us a drawing of the pattern which we put on the ring itself.

And last, here’s a great gift for those elk hunters (like me) reading this post:

Our custom ring redesigns, creating new jewelry from old, can be made using any inspiration!

This client sent us his old bracelet and his elk tooth and we carved and fabricated the ring on the right. Custom repurposing jewelry projects like this run about $1500 or so.

The ring above required us to create a hand carved wax model and then cast out the design, using old gold.

When casting for redesign or repurposing jewelry, the best practice is to purchase alloy from a supply house and mix it with 24K (pure) gold. Recasting old gold from an old ring can pose difficult challenges due to the fickle and unpredictable nature of heat, precious metal, and unknown alloys in a hot flask.

But here's what you have to know about this kind of  before you start:

There needs to be a lot of extra gold in the casting process for the sprue — the piece of metal that attaches the wax to a structure within the casting flask. The sprue can have as much or more gold by weight than the ring.

So, if you want us to cast a ring using your gold, send us a lot of gold. Or, we can move forward using our gold to create the cast. In this case, you would have to be OK knowing your new ring will not be 100% your gold, but a combination of our gold and your gold.

But what this option does allow is for us to make virtually any engagement or wedding ring that you can imagine. Learn more about custom projects here.

CASE STUDY 10 Where Can I Get My Gold Melted Down?

While most wedding rings are made in 14K or 18K, because the alloy makes gold stronger, we can create wedding rings of any carat gold you wish, even 24K gold.

A pair of custom wedding rings, crafted in pure 24K gold!

The photograph above shows the two rings that are made of 24K gold. The customer sent us a pure gold ounce from which we fabricated the rings by hand:

A bar of 24K gold. A customer sent us this to craft their wedding rings of out.

Here’s another example of that same process, this time using a gold coin which we cut up and used to fabricate a new design:

We repurposed the gold coin shown here to create a gold ring.

The square and round pieces of gold are what remained from the gold we used to make the ring.

Redesigning Wedding Rings and Engagement Rings from Old White Gold Jewelry

CASE STUDY 11  Can White Gold Be Melted Down And Reused?

Redesign wedding ring projects using white gold poses special challenges.

White gold is made with alloy that turns yellow gold into its white color. This alloy has special qualities that often make a high polish finish difficult when repurposing jewelry.

If you want a smooth, high-polish finish with your old wedding ring redesign, about 85% of the time, there's no issue. But about 15% of the time, small impurities in the form of tiny pits show through. This issue comes up specifically when using old white gold to make new white gold jewelry or new white gold wedding rings.

Some of our customers embrace this look. But for those who don't like it, we highly recommend, when considering ideas for old wedding rings, a design like our Playa style rings or rings with a hammered finish.

But if you opt for a smooth high-polish finish, you may end up with a surface as shown below:

We can redesign wedding rings and engagement rings from old white gold jewelry, as shown here! We transformed this old white gold engagement ring into a brand new pair of white gold wedding rings.

This white gold engagement ring contained an inscription on the inside of the band, marking the wedding date of a young couple.

When we repurposed this piece as a pair of smaller wedding rings, we re-created the inscription on the outside.

If you don't want a textured finish, we can simply buy your gold at 93% of its value and create your design using new white gold.

Here's what I recommend:

If you want a high polish, let's just go for it. If not, or if we do have pitting, then we can talk about options. Finishes are always applied as the last stage in ring production.

CASE STUDY 12  Resetting Diamonds in a New Ring

One customer had her mother's ring sitting in the back of her jewelry drawer for many years.

She wanted to honor the memory of her mother, but the ring's style just wasn't for her. Perhaps you’ll understand why she was wanted to reset the diamonds from this photo:

We can reset inherited or heirloom diamonds in a new engagement ring or other jewelry redesign, and even reuse your gold. It's a great way to honor the cherished memory of a loved one.

The ring, shown at center, was in 14K white gold. The necklace with onyx beads was in 18K yellow gold.

Our customer wanted a halo style ring with accent sapphires. I provided the sapphires, as well as several extra diamonds. In our jewelry redesign process, we made several versions of CAD/CAM sketches:

CAD/CAM sketches allow us to show you a finished piece of jewelry or diamond engagement ring before it is manufactured.

One advantage of using CAD/CAM for reset diamond projects is that we can show you what a finished product will look like before it's manufactured. We won't move forward with resetting your diamonds until you approve!

Here’s a look at the outcome of our reset diamond projects:

This reset diamond project took an outdated, multi-diamond ring, and and turned it into this gorgeous, modern, halo diamond and sapphire ring.

Looks gorgeous, doesn't it?

And here's the kicker:

The diamond resetting cost was offset by the extra 18K yellow gold in the first photo above, which we paid 93% of spot price for. (More on this in PART 3, our section on cost, below!)

[ Unsure if CAD/CAM or handwork is best for you? Let’s figure it out! Give me a call at 888-733-5238, or email info (at) reflectivejewelry.com ]

Case Study 13

Here's one last project for your consideration!

For this project, our client asked us to transform her old inherited gold rings into a new white gold stacker set. We flush set the small stones stones, and added a hammer finish to the stacker rings:

This jewelry repurposing project began with old inherited rings, which were transformed into a lovely stacker set.

Is Recycling Your Gold Eco Friendly?

Now, a few final points before we conclude...

Despite white other “ethical” jewelers may misleadingly claim, the answer is, not particularly. The bottom line is recycled gold as an eco-friendly proposition is just another form of greenwashing.

We are poineers in ethical sourcing in North America and the only Fairtrade Gold jewelers in the USA. There are over 250 in the UK alone, but here, the movement has not taken off. If you want to know why, take a deep dive into my Ethical Sourcing Exposé.

But the key point is this:

Regardless of how much jewelry is recycled, gold mining will continue, particularly in the case of small-scale miners who live in impoverished exploited conditions. I explain why in this July 2020 feature article I wrote for Canada's top jewelry trade magazine.

We have to do something for those impoverished small-scale miners — 25 million of them. Fairtrade Gold gives them the best chance to live dignified lives, and reduces global mercury contamination.

Fairtrade Gold ensures fair pay and labor standards, and safe working conditions. Fairtrade premiums are fed back directly to the community.

The real value of reusing inherited gold in a new engagement ring, or considering what to do with an inherited wedding ring is that the gold has talismanic importance and saving money.

If we need more gold for your ring, we can use recycled gold or Fairtrade Gold. Fairtrade gold is better, as I explain in my 15 Reasons You Should Buy Fairtrade Gold Jewelry vs. Recycled Gold Jewelry.

PART 2:  Melting Gold Jewelry Into New Jewelry

These photos (and video) below show how we work with most of our old wedding ring redesign projects, which involve handmade fabrication.

Melting gold jewelry is the first step to redesign old jewelry. This two minute video shows how we do it in a step by step process explained:

Because we're melting it down, we can use gold from any source to repurpose old jewelry. And, it doesn't matter so much if we end up mixing carats. We can combine a 10K ring with a 14K ring, melting two rings together to form one.

If we are going to cast, we would use this gold as shown above in its ingot form.

But with hand-fabricating, we take that lump of old gold and put it through our mill shown below:

This mill is used to roll out an ingot of gold into a wire, which can then be fashioned into a circular ring shape.

On the very left, here, you can see the gold wire coming through the mill.

Even if we are going to convert a ring to a necklace, old jewelry into new jewelry involves rolling out metal. The key difference is that in jewelry redesign projects (aka non-rings) we create a sheet of gold from which we cut out design motifs.

For a basic wedding ring redesign, as you'll see, we modify the wire shape.

This rolled out gold from an old wedding ring is ready to be reshaped into a new wedding ring, engagement ring, or other piece of jewelry.

This gold wire is what we get from running a gold ingot through the roller mill above.

This modification — shaping and forming the metal, by hand, into the desired width and thickness — is the key to redesigning an old wedding ring.

Once we have the size, width and thickness correct for your ring redesign, we shape and form the new ring, using a special type of pliers:

Once the gold from the old wedding ring is rolled out, our artisans use hand tools to form it into the shape of the new wedding ring.

It requires tremendous skill and takes time to get everything just right. Below the ring is further shaped on a mandrill.

Hammering the old gold into a new wedding ring is a key part of the process—it helps define the size and shape of the new ring from old gold.

Our four jewelers, an all-woman team, bring decades of maker experience to redesigned old jewelry and redesigned wedding rings.

Once this is polished up, we have the ring shown!

You would never know that this new wedding ring was crafted from old gold!

This design is our basic 3mm flat-topped comfort fit ring, but again we can make in any width.

The process of redesigning an engagement ring or wedding ring is a complex and multiphase job that can take many hours. Sometimes, when we use an inherited gold wedding or engagement ring we have to endlessly polish to get out pits and impurities because the alloys in the gold come to the surface.

This is particularly true when we repurpose a gold chain, which can have a lot of solder in it. Pitting happens about 25% of the time when repurposing white gold and about 5% of the time when repurposing yellow gold. In almost all cases, we can fix the pitting. When we can't, we can explore options such as a hammer or textured finish.

Let me elaborate: on this question how we go about reusing inherited gold in a new engagement ring, or what to do with an inherited wedding ring, every project is somewhat of a custom design project.

The good news is: you have endless options!

As long as we are making new jewelry from old jewelry with gold, we can make an infinite number of old wedding ring redesigns in gold or silver. If you want something in platinum, we can purchase your platinum at 93% of spot price, and put this toward your jewelry redesign.

PART 3:  How Much Does Jewelry Repurposing Cost?

One of the primary concerns when using old jewelry to make new jewelry is cost. Wedding ring redesign or engagement ring redesign projects vary in cost depending upon the complexity of the job.

So, how much does it cost to remake a ring?

Our basic projects, which involves melting old jewelry into new jewelry, start at $495.

For that, we’ll make a comfort fit flatted topped ring or our comfort fit domed ring.

Our Flat topped vs domed comfort fit wedding rings. These rings are both 6mm wide, but can be made in any width you choose!

These comfort fit flat-topped and domed rings are both 6mm wide, but can be made in any width. Learn more about comfort fit rings here and see our selection here.

Our pricing reflects the time involved in your redesigned wedding ring project. The $495 quote applies to a yellow gold ring 2mm-4mm wide.

For a ring between 5mm-8mm wide, the cost is $620. (More surface area means we have to deal with more cracking and clean up, as well as more effort to shape the ring.)

For anything over 8mm, it's best to contact us at 888-733-5238 or info(at)reflectivejewelry.com.

There’s a $100 upcharge for using white gold in repurposed wedding rings, because of difficulties in working this kind of metal. We also can’t guarantee a polished finish, as discussed above.

Other factors involved in how much does it cost to have a ring made:

A hammered finish runs $75. We can also engrave your repurposed wedding ring for $15 per letter, with a 6-letter/$75 minimum.

If you want to create two rings, and they are both the same width, we'll offer a discount on the second ring — regardless of sizing.

One last thing: if there are gemstones that we need to remove, we charge based on our hourly labor rate —$145/hr.

You can get a better look at the complex processes of melting and rolling out your gold in this article here

So, one question that often comes up is: do you save money on this kind of old wedding ring redesign?

The answer is: given the price of gold, which is hovering around $2750 an ounce, you do save money in making new rings from old.

Here's another key point:

Otherwise, we can use recycled gold or Fairtrade Gold, sourced from this mine. We are the only Fairtrade Gold jewelers in the entire USA. (I tell you why in this article I wrote for Canada's top jewelry trade magazine.)

But what if you want your old wedding rings redesigned and you don't have enough gold or budget?

We can still work with you!

Ideas For Old Wedding Rings Repurposing That Save Money

Let's say that you want to have old wedding rings redesigned. Your existing material is a 14K gold ring weighing a fifth of an ounce. Maybe it's two 3mm rings that are size 6. You want a size 10 ring that is 4mm wide.

We have three options to save you money when considering ideas for old wedding rings!

1.   Alloy down your gold. Simply speaking, in wedding ring redesign, if we add yellow gold alloy to the amount of gold you have, the material may end up 10K (.417 gold content) vs. 14K (.585 gold content.) The cost for this is just $35. The ring will still be gold — it will just have less gold content.

The higher the carat of gold, the more the gold looks...like gold. But don't worry about it. Your ring will still look great. If the reason for your repurposing is what to do with grandma's wedding ring, the carat of the gold really doesn't matter.

 2.   Sell us your gold. If you're wondering, "where can I get my gold melted down," send it to us! We'll buy it from you at 93% of spot price — and put this toward your wedding ring redesign cost. We can also apply extra gold value from any old jewelry into a new jewelry project.

If you are not sure whether your old chain is real gold or merely plated, send it along anyway. If it is real gold, I'll credit you. If it is not, I'll send it back to you.

Spot price is fixed on the London Bullion Market price on the day your materials are received in our shop.

3.   Recycle old jewelry within your wedding ring redesign. Use extra gold that you have from jewelry you don't care about to mix with your wedding rings in the wedding ring redesign project. We can melt all your gold together to make new rings from old rings.

Here's one final idea that can also save you money!

Suppose that you have 14K white gold rings and you want to make 14K yellow gold rings. I will exchange your white gold for yellow gold, one for one. The fee for that service is just $35.

How Much Does it Cost to Get a Ring Custom Made on CAD/CAM using your gold and gems?

Now, if your project is more complex or full-on custom and we can't build it by hand, we can produce it using CAD/CAM as shown below.

When you are considering ideas for old wedding rings, or custom jewelry from old jewelry, start by sending us your design idea.  We can assist with design decisions and we will give you a quote to make it.

Whatever you want to make, we can produce a customized version of it.

We can design and create any ring you can dream of using CAD/CAM software.

We use CAD/CAM software to design a model on a computer and print this in wax.

CAD/CAM wedding ring redesign costs depend upon the nature of each project. Really simple CAD production can be as little as $995.

But, generally, rings with gemstones are $1250 and upward, depending upon the complexity of the project.

The redesigning wedding rings project from Case Study 3 above, for example, was also done on CAD/CAM and cost $1500.

Setting the small stones cost $44 each and this center stone cost $155 to set.

This is the same ring redesign project from Case Study 3, above. This custom diamond ring redesign was created using CAD/CAM software. We combined two rings into one, including a diamond resetting.

But what about the cost of other jewelry redesign projects? Making a ring into a necklace, or resetting a diamond, for example....

Again, we need to just talk because pricing varies according to the scope of the project and materials. But depending on the time and complexity, they generally start at around $750.

Gemstone and Diamond Resetting Cost

The good news is, we will happily set your diamonds and colored gemstones, even rough gemstones, into your wedding or engagement ring redesign.

In fact, probably about 30% of the repurposed designer jewelry we make involves using our customers' own gemstones.

Here, one of our jewelers is shown setting a diamond into a custom engagement ring that uses our Flores motif.

Here, one of our jewelers is shown setting a diamond into a custom engagement ring that uses our ever-popular Flores motif.

The cost of custom ring setting, or resetting diamonds into a new ring, varies widely according to the setting type, size of the stone, type of stone and complexity of the project.

But I can still offer you some general examples of costs we typically charge when we 're repurposing rings. Please note that we cannot use your gold and silver for the mounting of gemstones. We typically purchase them from jewelry supply houses, ready-made.

Here are five examples along with our general pricing for material in 14K gold:

1.  Flush setting.  Also known as "gypsy setting," we can do this type of setting for gemstones up to 2.5mm. There's no extra material involved. We simply drill a hole into the metal and set the stone. We charge $44.

2.  Bezel setting.  This price has many variables, such as karat of metal and size of stone. A 3mm diamond with a 14K bezel in our ring would run in the $70 range. A 5mm bezel-set diamond would be about $150. The best thing to do is to call and discuss your project with me.

3.  Channel setting or Pavé.  This price mainly depends upon how many gemstones and the nature of the project itself. For small stones, we charge $29 per stone setting.

4.  Prong setting.  Typically, prong setting of a 5 mm gemstone can range from $55 to $200, depending upon the kind of setting used — karat of gold, number of prongs, style, etc.

Honestly, redesign wedding ring or redesign engagement ring projects are typically custom jobs. It is difficult to quote exact pricing in an article like this, but I just wanted to give you some idea.

We are very transparent about our pricing structure, and always happy to answer questions. Call us at 888-733-5238, or email info (at) reflectivejewelry.com.

Two final critical points!

First, we generally have some flexibility in jewelry redesign cost. For example, suppose you want to add gemstones but you cannot afford them. You can send the repurposed jewelry back to us in a year, and we can reset the diamond or gemstones then.

I can also offer you a payment plan that works for you. The key point is, I will do the best I can to meet your budget. There are a lot of variables in jewelry repurposing jobs.

Also, while we generally require 50% down before we begin the repurpose jewelry job, often I can waive that fee because the gold you send in serves as a deposit.

Second, we do charge for shipping on repurposing jobs.

For simple repurposing wedding ring projects that do not contain expensive material, insured return shipping can run between $25 and $30. Sometimes, however, we receive high-value diamonds that might cost upwards of $70 to ship back.

In these cases, we will contact you with the return shipping cost to ask how much insurance you'd like.

PART 4:  ABOUT US

Since 1995, we have been making new jewelry from old, focusing on old wedding ring redesign and creating new jewelry from old gold.

We also specialize in all kinds of custom jewelry design using old gold that our customers send us from all over North America to make new pendants, bracelets or even earrings.

The Reflective Jewelry gallery, located in Santa Fe, New Mexico in the Baca Street Arts District.

Visit us in Santa Fe New Mexico! We're Santa Fe's 2019 Green Business of the Year. Our workshop is adjacent to the store.

Three things give us an extraordinary capacity for this kind of custom work that few others can match:

First, we can design just about anything any other jeweler can using CAD/CAM computer programs using your gold! That means that if you want a three-diamond ring, reset an engagement ring, create earrings with 60 pavé diamonds, or simply convert a wedding ring into a pendant or cross, we can do it.

Second, we are experts in hand fabrication repurposing old jewelry using your gold and gems. Though we have technical expertise, we are designers, artisans, and makers. We have over 80 years of combined bench work experience. For example, while most jewelers (including us) can design something on a computer and send it off to be made, few have the skill to take on this sort of project:

"I love it!!!"

We are part of a Southwest jewelry fabrication tradition that dates back to the Spanish Conquistadors. We work with hand-forged anvils, rolling mills, cow horn mallets, domed steel and a huge variety of specialty maker tools used to cut metal by hand, forge designs, and stamp out motifs.

Third, With most projects, you get to deal directly with the owner or general manager of a small designer jewelry studio. Everything is personal with us.

Here's the bottom line:

Whether it’s using old diamonds in a new ring, converting a ring to a necklace, transforming old gold earrings, bracelets, or chain into a ring or something else,we can take on projects that few jewelers would ever consider.

Concluding Thoughts

We hope this provides at least a starting point for what to do with old gold jewelry! If you have any more questions, call me at 888-733-5238 so we can talk personally about the project.

Otherwise, you can email me at info (at) reflectivejewelry.com. You can also leave your question or comment in the comment section below. It can take me 24 hours to get back to you, particularly on the weekends.

PS: One more thing: shipping. I get many questions over how to get the gold to me. We recommend US Postal Service, insured. The postman comes into our store, and we sign for high value packages. Send the jewelry to me, Attn: Kyle Bi, Reflective Images,  912 Baca Street, Santa Fe, NM 87505.

I already have had some of my dad's yellow gold rings looked at and they are able to be melted down and made into a 6mm band with an edging. Im looking at other estimates?
Posted by: Brand Ambassador @ RJ.com on Nov 21, 2017
Hello Mr. Smith, yes we do this sort of thing all the time. Are you local to Santa Fe? Or are you out of town?

I have my grandmother wedding ring and I would like to make it into a different ring that fits my fingers are you able to help me
Posted by: Marc Choyt on Jan 15, 2018
Rob, we can generally make a new ring from an old ring, especially if you are looking for a simple wedding band. We melt the gold, then reform the gold into the material from which we make the band by hand. The cost isn't as much as buying a new band because you just pay for our time. If you are interested in this, please give us a call. 888-733-5238,

Do you make new rings out of old rings
Posted by: Marc Choyt on Jan 24, 2018
Hi Gloria, In some cases, yes, we can do that. Please contact us at 888-733-5238 to discuss possibilities. Thanks!

I have ~20gm of old gold rings (~6rings ) from family and previous marriages that I was hoping might be used to make two plain wedding rings (1x 2-3mm and 1x 3-4mm) that could be inset with an emerald and two diamonds reflecting the emerald and diamond engagement ring I gave my fiancé last year. I have two emerald and diamond rings (1x eternity ring and 1x engagement ring) that were my mothers that could provide the gemstones. What are the prospects of my realising my dreams ?????
Posted by: Marc Choyt on Jan 29, 2018
Hi Barry, We can do this. Give us a call at 888-733-5238. We'll also give you 93% of the spot value for the gold that we don't use, which can go toward the cost of producing a ring.

Hello, My fiance and I were wanting him to use an family heirloom ring (18k simple band 3 or 3.5 mm) that happens to be a number of sizes too small. It's 8.5 or so and he needs 12. We are located in Indiana. Are you able to take long-distance requests? If so, what might that run? We'd be interested in it being flattened a touch too as opposed to rounder in shape.
Posted by: Marc Choyt on Apr 30, 2018
We definitely work long distance customers all the time. We can help you reshape and remake your ring. Give us a call at 888-733-5238 or email me: Marc(AT)reflectivejewelry.com and we'll figure out the next step.

I would like a rough estimate on making a new wedding band for my husband out of my old wedding band?

Sorry for my slow reply. Generally, it depends upon the time it takes, but a range might be between $300 and $500,.

I have two substantial wedding bands of mine and my deceased husband. They are yellow gold with a flowers engraved around (I, of course, can send you pictures). I would like to have a small (I have small wrist) simple bracelet made out of them and retain at least one of the flowers in the design. I realize that more gold may be required - and wouldn't mind a mix of white and yellow. Is this something you could help with - or do you have any other ideas for repurposing such sentimental jewelry? Thanks in advance!

I'm confused. This article essentially says you can't make a simple gold band using other gold bands (new gold band made from Granny's old bands). But in the comments attached to the article, you say, test, we do it all the time. I have 3 inherited gold bands, I'd like made into one gold band. Is that possible?
Posted by: Marc Choyt on Dec 09, 2019
Hi Julie, sorry for the confusion. We have modified the article to correctly state that we can make new wedding rings from the gold in old wedding rings. We can also make new jewelry, earrings, pendants etc from gold in old jewelry.

Can a gold band with 8 small diamond chips and a small garnet be made into a white gold or platinum band with or without the jewels?

Thank you for this informative post. I’m hoping to have my recently deceased mama’s wedding band turned into simple bands for my sister and me. I’m not with my mom’s ring (and it was remade 15 years or so ago, she lost her 1965 original). From memory, it is likely 24ct and about 5mm. I was imagining something like your simplicity bands for my sister and me (no diamonds) and wonder what ballpark we might be looking at for expenses and timelines. Thank you so much, Annette
Posted by: Marc Choyt on Nov 23, 2018
Hi Annette, It your mama's ring is indeed 24K gold, then it would be quite unique. I've never had 24K gold rings come into my shop. More than likely, it is 18K or 14K gold. That being the case, we could certainly make two rings out of it, provided that there is enough gold for us to do so. Ultimately it would depend upon how wide your mama's ring is and how wide you want your rings. But assuming all this worked out, I think that for us to make two new rings out of that one old one would run about $800.

Hello, I'm interested in remaking my wedding ring and band into one single ring. I'd like something simple with the diamond imbedded. It's a small diamond, so I'm thinking that would help to imbed it. I have no idea if this is possible. I'm wondering where you are located, and what the process is? Thank you for your response.

We can definitely do what you'd like. In terms of process, the best thing is that you email me : Marc(AT)reflectivejewelry.com or just give us a call at 888-733-5238 so that I can answer your specific questions. In most cases I can give you a pretty good price estimate. If you decide to move forward, you just send us the rings and once we agree upon everything I take a 50% deposit, and the balance once the job is done.

Thanks for your very kind words about our shop. Most jewelry today is designed on a computer, printed out on a 3 D scanner, and sent to casting. Very little handwork, except setting stones. We are really old style jewelers, working by hand. Using anvils and hammers. We have over 80 years of bench experience among our jewelers. The love of craft and tradition is infused in the piece itself.

Good morning! I want to repurpose a family engagement ring, as my wedding band. The ring looks to be white gold or platinum, I'm not sure. The ring has a small diamond that I'd like to keep, maybe in a bezel setting. I would also like to purchase smaller diamonds to set around it in a channel or pave type setting. Lastly, I would love to engrave two dates inside the ring. Is this possible? I would love any of your suggestions/creativity!

Hi Cher, we can definitely do exactly what you'd like us to. Make a new ring from old rings or old jewelry and set stones in them.

I have a very new ring that I’d like changed. I proposed to my now fiancé a little over one year ago (wedding scheduled for October of this year), with this ring. We have since bought a newer ring of the exact same style, but fit better so I have the original ring (minus the center diamond which is in the new ring) that I’d like to have turned into the wedding band. Is that possible? It is 18k white gold.

I have my mothers pink gold wide wedding band. I’m interested in having it cut in half and having two wedding bands made from it. Can this be done and approximately what would the cost be?
Posted by: Marc choyt on Jul 23, 2019
Hi Denise, We can definitely do that. The width of the new rings is going to depend upon your sizes and the size of your mother's ring. The initial cost for one is $450. They take about 4.5 hours of time. Assuming that the new rings are the same width, the additional cost for the second would be $225. Please feel free to call me personally at 888-733-5238 or email Marc (at) reflectivejewery.com to discuss further.

Good afternoon, I have an heirloom plain gold comfort band wedding ring that I would like to have pave set with some stones and have a design engraved onto it. maybe like an astrological theme with the pave stones being the center of the stars or something like that. Maybe even something as simple S a pave center stone and then a hammered finish. I dont want to melt the ring down, or change the size/shape of it. Is that something your shop could do?
Posted by: Marc Choyt on Aug 21, 2019
Hi Amy, Hammer finish-- sure. We we flush set stones very close to each other, but we don't do pave in our shop. If you're set on pave, we're not the right company. But if you're open to other stone setting options, we're happy to work with you.

I have a thick gold band that was my mother’s wedding ring, a ring with very small diamonds that was my grandmothers, and a ring that was my great grandmothers with small diamonds. I’d like to get 5 bands with some of the small diamonds put in them.. I’d like for all three golds from the rings used in each band. Is this possible? And how much money would I be looking at? I’m in Florida
Posted by: Marc Choyt on Oct 16, 2019
Hi Natalie, First, yes we can do the job. However, in context to price, there are a lot of variables in your question. We charge $39 per stone to set small diamonds into a ring. And, we charge $450 to make a new ring from an old ring. If we are making new rings of all the same width, then the cost of making a second ring would be considerably less-- $250 and maybe even less for the third ring. If there is not enough gold, then we would have to add gold and I don't know the cost for this without more specifics. Hopefully, this gives you a starting place. If you have any questions or want to discuss the project give us a call at 888-733-5238,

Hello! I have an old charm bracelet that I would like to melt down and use to make a simple 4-piece puzzle ring. Can you give me an estimate of what this would cost? I can weigh the bracelet, but don't know if you will have too much (or too little) gold to make into the ring. Thank You.
Posted by: Marc Choyt on Nov 11, 2019
Hi Chris, I would have to see the design that you're thinking of to give you a price quote. Also, I'd have to know the weight of the bracelet. The best thing would be for you to contact me at marc (AT) reflectivejewelry.com with some images and we can go from there.

I had a shop accident and, thank God, I did not lose my finger; but, they had to cut off my wedding ring in the emergency room. It is a very plain ring (much like the remade rind in your photo) with a lot of sentimental value. I would like the ring remade from the old gold, and slightly larger (I realize you may need to add some gold). What is my next step?
Posted by: Marc Choyt on Nov 18, 2019
Hi Earl! The next step would be simply for you to send the ring that you have back to our shop. US post is good, as they will insure anything. Then, once I get the ring for you, I can let you know how much gold we'll need to complete the job. Send the ring to me: Marc Choyt, Reflective Jewelry, 912 Baca St. Santa Fe, NM 87505 If you want to discuss, feel free to give me a call at 8878-733-5238.

I am interested in buying a chunk of metal with my boyfriend and using that chunk for our wedding rings (both bands and engagement setting). I am interested in sleek bands for the engagement and male ring but a sapphire encrusted female wedding band. How much metal should I be looking at purchasing for this? I am interested in mainly white gold or platinum - what type of metal (or metals) should I look at acquiring for a jeweller?
Posted by: Marc Choyt on Nov 18, 2019
Hi Sarah, If you want to work with platinum, we would be casting your ring. If you want us to hand fabricate your ring, then we would use the white gold. But we can alloy the gold white, so it would be best if you purchase 24K gold, or a high carat gold coin. In context to the amount, that depends upon the sizes and widths of your ring. If you could just call me at 888-733-5238 we can discuss this further and sort it out. Thanks for your interest!

Can you take my gold weeding band and turn it into a cross that I can put on a necklace?
Posted by: Marc Choyt on Nov 20, 2019
Hi Kevin, thanks for contacting me via email as well as posting this. As I said in my response to you, yes, this is definitely something we can do. Cost depends upon whether we can form the cross with wire as we have done in the heart image above-- that would be $450. If we need to carve it with wax, then cost would be determined by the complexity of the design.

Interested in seeing how much it would be to remake and dip and male wedding ring. I would like it dipped in a silver coating just can not be white gold (he has developed an allergy to it) I have some thoughts in mind of the design please let me know if dipping is even an option.
Posted by: Marc Choyt on Dec 04, 2019
Hi Haleigh, while wI cannot recommend dipping the ring in silver, we can rhodium plate the ring. We can also make the ring in white gold with a palladium alloy. The allergy to the white gold is due to the nickle content in the alloy. In the EU, white gold cannot be alloyed with nickle, but in the US it can. As for the price, I really don't have enough info to give you a quote. Please call or email me and we can discuss the job in greater detail.

Hi can you take a gold wedding ring and then melt it down and then add another metal, like black titanium in the middle?
Posted by: Marc Choyt on Jan 08, 2020
Hi Steve, we can add some other metals, such as silver, platinum or a different color or karat of gold. But we can't add titanium. Titanium is not a metal that we can shape and form by hand which is something that we can do with precious metals.

An estimate or range is fine. Thank you
Posted by: Marc Choyt on Feb 28, 2020
Hi Lauwana, If it is a simple wedding ring, a flat topped or domed ring, then it would be $450. Beyond that, it just depends upon what you want. The best thing would be if you email me the image of what you're thinking. Marc (AT) reflectivejewelry.com.

My grandmother passed down her wedding band to me. He bands are 14k yellow gold and mine are white gold.. they have diamonds chips in both hers and mine and I would like to reuse all of the rings to make one or possibly two bands. Is it possible to combine them since they are different colors of gold?
Posted by: Marc on Mar 10, 2020
Hi Kody, good questions... We can mix white gold and yellow gold-- the only issue is, the color of the metal is not a radiant yellow or a clean white. If you're ok with that, there's no problem on our end with mixing the two metals. As for the diamond chips, we can set those in the ring. The cost, assuming that there are 2.5mm or under, is $39 per stone. Feel free to call me at 888-733-5238 if you have additional questions....

We can take gold for payment. We'll purchase it at 93% of spot price toward your invoice. And, in terms of what we can make-- pretty much anything you would want. How long? That just depends upon how complex the job it--anywhere form two week or sooner to a month or so is the general time frame for most projects.

The process for melting down bracelets or earrings is the same as it would be for a ring. The cost depends upon the style-- starting with a basic comfort fit band: $450. But we can do any wedding ring style you'd like. I'd have to know more to determine costing.

I see they are willing to reuse gold and turn it into new jewelry but does anyone know if they’re willing to accept gold bullion? For example I have 2x 1oz American Gold Eagle $50 coins and each one has 1 full Troy ounce of gold. If a wedding ring weighs say 10 grams and a Troy ounce weighs 31 grams is there any way I can have them use 10 grams to make the ring (a plain gold wedding band with no gems, art or writing of any kind) and then give them X amount of the remaining 20 grams of gold as a commission? Thanks!
Posted by: Marc Choyt on Nov 12, 2020
We can certainly use 10 grams of fine gold to make your ring. It could be enough-- it just depends upon your size and the allow you choose. You can use extra gold to pay for the entire job. The cost is $450 plus shipping. If you'd like to move forward, just send me your address and phone number so I can put you in our system. Then, send your material to me. Hi Cindee, Yes, we can totally do that for you. Choose a design, simple or elaborate, and we can make it. For basic comfort fit bands, the cost is $450, plus shipping. I have my grandmother's first wedding ring set -gold (with small diamonds), my mother's empty set -white gold (with one small diamond she couldn't use in her ring she had designed), and my solitaire and wedding band to use to make into a vintage wedding set for myself. Would it be possible for it to be white gold? Would it be possible to keep it close to the design of my grandmother's ring - but maybe just a little more spark - yet plain as possible. I would also want to use the diamonds. I believe there are 7 or 8. I know this really doesn't make much sense. I want to remain simple, vintage with just a little extra. I could send pictures so you could give me your opinion. I live in Springfield, CO, so am not too terribly far from Santa Fe. I know nothing about jewelry, so I'm pretty much at your mercy. Thank you in advance for your time!

Hi Marc I am wondering if you do work for Canadians. I have a couple wedding sets and a plain gold band , band is 10k I think the engagement and wedding bands are 14k . One set is 47 years old and one will be 25. My 25th anniversary is next June so I am thinking of getting it all melted down and made into one wide band with some of the diamonds placed on the top. The diamonds are quite tiny nothing large. I would like them to be flush mounted maybe the two of a bit larger size raised very lightly. I don't want anything that sticks up to high, less is better. If you can do this for me please let me know what I need to do and if there is something we do to guarantee the rings get to you and returned to us? I would also like a rough idea of what it might cost? Thank you Norine

I have ask all my local jeweler's none of them can do what I'm wanting.. I want to melt the broken pieces and the intact bangel and make a larger bangel... Any help or ideas would be great.... Thank u for ur time
Posted by: Marc Choyt on Mar 20, 2021
To put it bluntly, your jewelers are not makers and they also give you false information. We melt karat gold together and repurpose all the time. If there are issues, we deal with them. We melt various karats together all the time and we've even made bangles with old gold. So, for pricing-- our basic wedding ring cost is $450. This kind of custom project will take a bit more time. Have to melt the gold form an ingot, fabricate wire from that and then form into a bangle. So to make a bangle from your material-- depending on the design-- between $500 and $600. If you want to move forward, please email me your contact information and phone number so we can set you up in our system. Then, send the material to the address in my signature line.

I found a ring at an antique store that I really like and my boyfriend said that he wants to get it for me for when he proposes. But, I don't know what size it is or if it's even set in gold. I like it because of the stone. It's not a diamond. I think that it's Angel Aura Quartz and, it's in a marquise cut. It's not very big but, it's beautiful. I have a few reference pictures based on searches that I've done online to try and find my perfect ring. I was wondering... Could you use it to remake it into something like I found online but, with the Quartz stone? If so, that's awesome. We're not ready to do that just yet. We're shopping around for price quotes. Thank you.

Hi Christina, Yes! We can use your gemstone to create any design you want on line. We just may have to vary the design slightly for copyright issues. As for price quotes, I'd have to see the style and size of the new ring, know the exact mm of the gem your wanting us to set, as well as the material. With all that, I should be able to give you a price quote.

Hi, I have a gold band that is squared off almost octagon from the top view and has diamond baguettes in it, approximately 8 that are placed front to back and inset with a cold rim. It does not go all the way around as the lower sides and bottom is gold(hollow inside so you can see the stones from the inside). I was thinking I would just like a more traditional baguette band that is round with the diamonds going from side to side. I can send a photo. I'm interested to learn more... I'm getting married next year and am interested in taking some family jewelry, melting it down and making a ring. It may be a mixture of gold and silver - which may not be ideal, but want your opinion. I also have a son and nephew in their late teens / early adult years and thought it would be cool to have them do this process at the same time - their make-up would be slightly different as they would take my metal and add some from their side of the family... Anyhow - you seem to have thought this through and I loved the web page - it was very informative!

I am interested in having my grandfathers wedding ring's gold incorporated into a new wedding band, a typical 5mm width domed comfort band. Of importance to me is to incorporate as much of my family ring's gold as possible adding additional gold as needed. I'd prefer my gold not be pooled with others if this is doable. I realize this makes for an extra effort. The current ring is 4mm width and appears to be 18k. Thanks for your review and consideration of this project, Bob Hamilton
Posted by: Marc Choyt on Nov 03, 2021
Robert, as we discussed over the phone, we can certainly do this project. The cost of making a new ring from your material is $500 plus any additional gold. This will be hand fabricated, so no casting is involved. We melt the metal and form it into wire. No issue of your gold being pooled with other gold. And, even when we do casting, we cast items individually, adding our gold for the sprue when necessary. As a rule we're super careful about making sure that your gold is in your ring.... We're a small studio, just six people, and we focus on this kind of custom work.

Yes! We definitely do that kind of work. What kind of ring would you like us to make for you? Any chance you could email us with an illustration of what you would like and a photo of what you have? Thanks so much for reaching out and I look forward to hearing back from you.

To whom this may concern, I'm interested in having my grandmother's gold wedding ring melted down to make a claddagh ring, if possible.

Hi Elizabeth, We can make one of our claddagh rings out of your gold. I'll email you some possible designs and see if they will work!

I have a 24 karat gold men ring. Can you provide me an estimate to melt down and put into another base? Probably a size 12.5 -13

Hi Norman. Sorry for my slow reply. Somehow I missed your comment. To answer your question ,yes we can do it. Cost depends upon the width of the ring., Please contact us with more specific information and we can provide a quote.

Peter, thank you for your interest. If you can provide me with a particular style for your cremation ring, we might be able to do it.

I think cremation jewelry rings are really a great idea. Not only are they aesthetic. but also commemorative. Can you use old gold to make me one?

Hello Marc, I really like the look of case study #4. Can you purchase the gems if I do not have enough or want a different one? Do you buy diamonds or other gems? Thank you for any info. Lisa

Thanks for comment! We definitely can purchase the gems to make Case Study 4 or alternative gems if you wish. Please let me know more about what you're thinking.

I have three rings that need to be redesigned either together or at your suggestions. Also, can you combine my husbands and my silver wedding rings for me? I have his fingerprint digitally saved from Funeral home. Can I transfer that onto the silver ring? Is that even possible? I am in North Carolina and I am having a hard time finding help with this. I can send you photos if you would like. Thanks.

Hi Marjory, We can definitely combine the silver rings for you. I might be able to do something with the finger print as well. Please email photos to Marc (at) Reflectivejewelry.com and we can take it from there.

Thanks for the photo and for contacting us. What size and width would you like your repurposed ring to be? From there, I can work out a price for you. Also, would you like it low domed or flat topped? Please let me know. Best to correspond directly to me via one of our website contact emails. They all come to me.

Sent you a pix of my old wedding ring I had melted down. Now I remarried that guy and would like to have that turned into a ring again

Hi. Can you make a 8 inch cuban bracelet 14 mm from gold coin? Bill
Posted by: Marc Choyt on Jun 17, 2022
Hi William, Thanks for contacting us! We typically don't make chain. It is generally machine made and mass produced and it's just not efficient to make it by hand.
